Marcegaglia has established its largest steel metallurgy plant in Ravenna, which serves as the central hub for integrated logistics, supporting production and distribution across the industrial group.
Among other production lines, the plant features three cold rolling lines with a manufacturing capacity of 2,500,000 tons per year, producing high-quality cold-rolled coils. Advanced automated controls ensure precision in thickness, width and tensile properties, with continuous measurement provided by the Tensil-Pro mathematical model, along with automatic defect detection for surface integrity.
Additionally, a new reversible rolling mill has been introduced, boasting a refined production capacity of 550,000 tons per year. With increased rolling capabilities and stringent tolerances, this mill allows the feasibility of most advanced steel grades such as high carbon steels and fully finished NGO steels.
Marcegaglia plant also operates four hot-dip galvanizing lines, producing galvanized coils with a total capacity of 2,000,000 tons per year. These lines are equipped with the SmartLine fully automatic control solution and monitoring of the zinc layers thickness and mechanical properties using the Tensil-Pro model, ensuring the production of high-quality galvanized products.
CROMATICA represents Marcegaglia’s advanced solution for customizing steel surfaces through digital printing on coils, offering a vast array of colors and patterns. Developed in collaboration with leading paint manufacturers, CROMATICA provides a durable, sustainable finish for various applications, from architectural elements to consumer products.
The cogeneration plant, with an installed power of 35 MW and high-efficiency (CAR) qualification, guarantees 67% of the plant’s electricity requirements, with 100% of the self-produced electrical power consumed on-site.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project: AdriatiCO2 funded by Innovation Fund (IF 2023 call)
AdriatiCO2, led by Marcegaglia Ravenna, is Italy’s first project to implement Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) to reduce CO₂ emissions in the Ravenna industrial district. It applies the most advanced CCUS technology to a cogeneration plant, using partially biomethane, together with a green Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant using biochar. The project aims to capture up to 112,000 tons of CO₂ annually, achieving a net carbon-negative impact.
Aligned with the REPowerEU Plan and European Green Deal, AdriatiCO2 supports decarbonization in the steel sector and contributes to Italy’s first geological CO₂ storage infrastructure. It establishes a scalable CO₂ value chain, benefiting industries in Ravenna and beyond, while setting a benchmark for industrial decarbonization in Southern Europe.
